Whether the result of flooding, or simply prolonged exposure to moisture and humidity, mold growth on wood can be a serious problem. Not only does this damage the wood itself, but it can also release harmful spores into your home. For relatively mild mold growth, you can remove it yourself. Here’s how.
1. Put on Protective Gear
Mold spores can irritate your skin and respiratory system. When cleaning, be sure to wear a mask and rubber gloves to protect yourself.
2. Vacuum
Once you are wearing appropriate protective gear, use a vacuum to remove dust and other debris from the wood. This will make it easier to complete the rest of the cleaning process.
3. Scrub
For the first round of cleaning, mix one tablespoon of dish detergent in one quart of water. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the mold with the detergent/water mixture.
4. White Vinegar for Mild Mold
If the mold growth was relatively mild, your next step is to spray the area with distilled white vinegar. This vinegar will kill the mold so that it doesn’t come back. Let the vinegar air dry.
5. Chlorine For Tough Mold
For tougher mold growth, or mold on unsealed wood, you’ll need to do some extra scrubbing. Mix one tablespoon of dish detergent, one cup of warm water, and half a cup of chlorine bleach. Use a soft-bristled brush to apply the mixture. This will clean and disinfect the surface.
6. Sand and Refinish
Finally, if there are any lingering mold stains after you’ve cleaned the wood, you will need to sand and refinish it. Wait until the wood is fully dry before sanding and refinishing. Sealing the wood can also help protect it from future water damage and mold growth.
