Mold grows in basements because basements are the perfect environment for it. Between 60- and 80-degrees F, a little moisture, some surfaces to feed off, and tons of room for growth. It’s perfect for something as hazardous and aggressive as mold.
What do I do to reduce the chances of getting mold in my basement?
- Look for moisture on your walls or windows. Condensation occurs when the inside of your home is warmer than the outside. Add insulation to avoid this.
- After a leak, remove all water-damaged materials.
- Use a dehumidifier or an air conditioner to reduce humidity. Mold won’t grow when humidity is below 60%.
- Clean your ventilation systems on a regular basis, and make sure to check the filters in your HVAC. If you don’t already have a ventilation system, get one. This ensures every room gets enough airflow.
- Have a water leak? Clean it up quickly and ventilate the area until it’s all dry.
