Although summer can provide beautiful weather that makes you want to be outside every single day, it is also a season of severe weather. Whether it be thunderstorms, tornadoes, or flooding, you never quite know exactly what you are going to get. Since weather can be so unpredictable, it is important to be prepared for everything.
Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms can bring down a ton of rain and high winds, but the most important aspect that you MUST know how to deal with is lightning. Here’s a small checklist of what to do if caught in a thunderstorm:
- If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to get struck by lightning. Find the closest safe shelter in a sturdy building or car.
- Get out of the water and out of the boats.
- Unplug appliances and stay away from metal pipes and telephone lines.
Tornadoes
Tornadoes are very common in the Midwest and can happen at any time of the day. It is smart to download a weather app so that you can keep an eye on weather alerts. Here’s some precautions to take in the case of a tornado hitting you:
- Create a tornado shelter room (most likely your basement)
- Create a safety-kit for at home, and in-car tornado essentials
- Buy a portable phone charger to ensure you keep up to date with emergency
Floods
Floods are very unpredictable and are known to be the cause of plenty of deaths. As a pre-requisite in preparation for a flood, you need water, food, and medications as well as a mobile charger. Should a flood occur, your family should create an evacuation plan towards high ground.
