When it comes to the types of storms that could cause damage to your home, few events can be more destructive than a derecho. These fast-moving thunderstorms can bring incredibly destructive winds that wreak havoc on your property. Here’s what you should know about these storms and how to prepare for them.
What Makes Derechos Different From Regular Thunderstorms?
Derechos occur when wet air from a thunderstorm meets drier air in the surrounding atmosphere. This causes the water to evaporate, cooling the surrounding air. That cool air rapidly sinks to the ground, creating powerful downbursts with fast wind, which in turn, suck in more dry air. This creates a repeating cycle that increases the strength of the downbursts.
Eventually, large downbursts can form into derechos, with winds speeds between 58 and 130 miles per hour in a storm that can be over 200 miles long. In addition to the hurricane-speed winds, heavy rains that come with these storms can also cause flash floods.
How to Prepare For Derechos
The high winds produced by derechos can knock down trees and send loose objects flying through the air. Trim overhanging trees away from your house. Bring lawn furniture and other objects inside when you get a severe weather alert. After the storm, check your roof for missing shingles or fallen branches, and inspect the basement for signs of flooding.
