During heavy rainstorms, the soil can become so inundated with water that it starts to seep into your basement. Basement flooding can cause significant damage, but if you respond quickly, it doesn’t have to be a total disaster.
Stay Out of the Water
Never enter your basement when it is flooded. In addition to bacteria from the floodwaters, you could get shocked by submerged appliances or outlets. Shut off power to the basement from your home’s circuit breaker and contact water damage professionals to pump out the water.
Dry the Area
After water has been pumped out from the basement, everything needs to be dried out as quickly as possible. Water damage restoration teams will typically use industrial blowers and dehumidifiers to remove lingering moisture. Wet objects (including carpeting) should also be removed from the basement and placed in a separate area to dry.
Stop Mold Growth
Whenever flooding occurs, mold growth is a definite possibility. In addition to drying out the basement, all surfaces that were affected by the floodwaters need to be cleaned and disinfected to kill any mold spores that might be present. Continue monitoring the basement in the weeks after a flood so you can identify and respond to suspicious areas in a timely manner.
