Water is powerful. It is a necessity. But, when it enters our homes in unwelcoming ways, it is an unfortunate situation. Below, let’s examine ways to prevent these winter time blues with water damage.
FROZEN PIPES
The most common winter time water issue is when our water pipes burst. When the temperature outside is freezing, the water inside our pipes can also freeze, causing the water to expand and burst the pipe it’s in. This issue can be prevented by keeping your water pipes insulated or allowing heat to reach those pipes.
HOT WATER HEATER LEAK
It is a great idea to have your hot water heater inspected before cold weather. If your unit is old and has sediment build up, it can cause problems. The unit also has to work harder in cold temperatures to keep the water heated. These issues can cause leaks or worse.
FROZEN GUTTERS
As snow melts from your roof, it typically drains through your gutters. However, if your gutters are full of frozen water, that melting snow spills over your gutters. This can cause foundation damage, mold growth, and a leaky roof if it is not intact. Clear your gutters frequently to avoid standing water from freezing.
OUTDOOR WATER LINES
Outside water lines need to be emptied and turned off during winter weather and outside spigots can be protected with an insulated cover. As mentioned above, if water flows freely in these lines during cold temperatures, the risk of bursting is greater.
