Emotional Recovery After a Traumatic Residential Fire
After a traumatic residential fire there is so much loss. The home and material possessions may be destroyed, and often the family’s vehicles are even lost. But, what about the emotional destruction and loss?
There will be situations you will go through after a residential fire such as relocating and rebuilding and these alone bring about serious stress. You may experience multiple stages of grief such as shock, anger, bitterness, and hopelessness. But the loss of safety, the loss of your security, and the loss of your comfort is real and in need of recovery. Let’s examine ways to heal from this internal and significant loss.
Ways You Can Heal
- Don’t spend a lot of time alone. Schedule time with friends and family so you can be with people you love.
- Give yourself permission to grieve. Expressing your sadness and emotional loss is a healthy way to process what you’ve been through.
- Talk! Talk about your loss, your feelings, your grief to those you love and trust.
- Get plenty of rest and provide yourself with a consistent sleep/awake routine.
- Engage in stress relieving practices such as prayer and meditation, deep breathing, and exercise.
- Find joy. Schedule specific times for doing those things that bring you joy and with the people who bring you joy.
- Avoid making significant life changes during this time of healing.
- Make small decisions often to prove to yourself that you are healing, moving forward, and taking steps to recovery.
- Don’t set extreme expectations for yourself. Let yourself heal slowly and completely.
- Eat a healthy diet. And avoid alcohol and drugs.
- Have an attitude of gratitude. Make a list of everything you are thankful for and study it daily.
- Allow others to assist you. Take advantage of community support programs, recovery assistance, and the support of your church.
If you’re dealing with children who have lost their home, it is important to remember that they will cope in much the same way as they see the adults in the situation coping. Allow them to talk about their fears and sadness as well. Enable them to resume their daily routine as much as possible. Their little hearts are hurting as well.
